Travel, Cargo, Mail Information
Ny-Ålesund belongs to the easiest accessible remote research stations in the Arctic, both for persons and for cargo. As Ny-Ålesund is owned and maintained by Kings Bay AS, check their web pages for many useful hints, as well as the web pages of Svalbard Science Forum (SSF).
Ny-Ålesund is accessible by air traffic at least twice weekly. By international airlines, you get connections to the international airport of Oslo (Oslo Gardamoen). From here, there is nearly daily service to Longyearbyen via Tromsö, performed by SAS Norge. You can find information about arrivals and departures at Longyearbyen Airport here.

Passengers for the flight from Longyearbyen to Ny-Ålesund have to be at AS Lufttransporten 45 min before departure time. AS Lufttransporten is located in the hangar building besides the main building of the airport.

If you have to stay overnight in Longyearbyen during your travel, you have the choice between few hotels and accomodations, e.g. Mary-Ann's Polarigg. The centre of Longyearbyen is about 3 km away from the airport. Transport is available by bus or taxi.
Cargo in general
When sending cargo to Ny-Ålesund, always prepare for the return sending as well. This relates to customs issues in your home country, as well as cargo handling issues in Ny-Ålesund itself.
When packing, use only reusable packing and filling material and prepare for using it on the return sending. Never use polystyrene flakes or similar, which will be blown by the wind.
Hazardous goods should not be send at all. Contact Kings Bay AS and ask them to provide any hazardous substances you might need.
Air cargo
Between any international airport and Longyearbyen, aircargo is handled as everywhere else in the world. But there are no special air cargo planes between Oslo and Longyearbyen, and therefore the weight and size of the colli is more limited. Air cargo must be labeled with the recepients address in Ny-Ålesund, the stations name and it should have the information "via Svalbard Airport Longyearbyen (LYR)".

Ship cargo
Cargo ships to Ny-Ålesund normally start in Tromsö. There are connections nearly every two to four weeks from May till November. There is irregular cargo ship service during winter, depending on demand and ice conditions (click here for further information).
