Research at AWIPEV

The research community in Ny-Ålesund enables international collaboration on various topics, supported by the thematic Ny-Ålesund Flagship Programmes on Atmosphere, Glaciology, Terrestrial Ecosystems and the Kongsfjorden System.

At AWIPEV Research Base, both long-term and short-term projects are carried out in the respective fields. The observatories, whose data contribute to various international networks, form a basis for this. All activites have previously gone through an annual AWIPEV project application process. Moreover, they are registered in the Research in Svalbard (RiS) database.

AWIPEV Data in International Networks

The monitoring measurements at AWIPEV Observatories contribute to these Arctic and Global observational networks:

  • BSRN (Baseline Surface Radiation Network)

  • GRUAN (GCOS Reference Upper-Air Network)

  • NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Changes)

  • TCCON (Total Carbon Observing Network)

  • GTN-P (Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost)
